Ricky Monserrat showed sometimes drag racing is more about finding a reliable combination than having the most power, taking out the Nitro Funny Car Fury event at Perth Motorplex on Saturday.
In the first round of racing Monserrat faced Allan Dobson in the Greene Machine. He took a massive holeshot and was on his way to a good pass when the blower belt parted company just past half track and Dobson was able to struggle by with a malfunctioning fuel system, a 6.13 defeating a 6.60. Dobson hurt various bits however and the crew had a lot of work to do. Ashley Bailey in Chemical Warfare made a solo pass but smoked the tyres just before 60 feet. Round two saw Monserrat up against Bailey. Monserrat took the holeshot but Bailey came back hard with a tough 3.59/221 to half track. That had him in front but some oil blew out of the engine and over the windscreen, forcing him off the noise as Monserrat pedalled but kept it lit through the traps for a 5.63 to 5.60 win. Dobson had the solo this time and started well but the motor was not healthy and 5.88 ended with rods out of the block in the braking area. With Dobson unable to return Monserrat and Bailey again raced. This time Bailey had the holeshot but Monserrat was on a tough run and a PB 5.42 defeated a 5.58 which was losing power at the top end.
