Front engine dragsters. They are a spiritual creation, no less, for many in the sport of drag racing with their nostalgic ties and that connection between man and motor which can not be matched. For West Australian racer Steve McGuinness it has been a passion but one that has certainly seen him go through his fair share of hell to reach six second heaven.
“Starting with the burnout, the slicks are right next to you, so you can gauge how your burn out is going by how high they stand and how much smoke is coming past you. Excellent fun. Sitting behind the Hemi, I cannot see down the track as there is a 14-71 supercharger and Enderle injection hat perched in front of my face. So navigating the track is done mostly with peripheral vision, watching the gap between the car and the wall and the car and the centre line. Given the 225” wheelbase, the car is fairly well behaved, as long as it leaves the start line without hitting the wheelie bar too hard. It still takes a bit of getting use to after the 9.3s of our Modified dragster. Things are going past reasonably fast at the top end of the track.” For the full feature buy the Feburary 16 edition of Dragster Australia magazine. |
