Education and Training Minister Mark McGowan officially opened the brand new Challenger TAFE Automotive Technology Skills Centre and then slid into the cockpit and opened the butterflies of Aaron Deery's Top Alcohol Dragster minutes after.

This ground-breaking new training Centre will push the College into becoming a leading Vocational Education Training (VET) provider of Light Automotive industry training, and is in a prime strategic location in the centre of the fastest-growing region in the Metropolitan area.

Programs will include school-based traineeships and the School Apprenticeship Link Program, as well as the standard suite of offerings including pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships, traineeships and post-trade courses.

A portion of the people that attended the opening ceremony watched as Mr McGowan started the 3,000 + horsepower engine in the Dragster.

Perth Motorplex Drag Racing Manager Ray Treasure who was invited to attend the opening said "Everything about this Centre is world class the equipment and facility is definately State of the Art and of course we are pleased the management choose a Dragster to help mark the opening"

With assistance from General Motors Holden, the new Automotive Technology and Skills Centre will undertake an exciting new concept which will see students be directly involved in setting up and maintaining the College's own car that will race at Street Events at the nearby Perth Motorplex.

"Perth Motorplex is proud to be associated with this new Automotive Technology and Skills Centre and we look forward to forming a strong working relaionship with the Staff and Students there." commented Treasure "To have a facility like this here in Kwinana will definately benefit the local community and also help to bring much needed resources to the Automotive Industry" he added.
The concept of the facility focuses on the main practical learning space of the automotive technology learning area. It will simulate the working environment with a state-of-the-art automotive repair workshop, an adjoining gallery space that incorporates a service
reception shopfront, specialist learning rooms and support spaces, and an exhibition space leading into general learning rooms. Industry-specific activities are also being accommodated
in spaces that can be converted to suit sponsors’ activities or research.

Just when you think you have seen it all, there is a dedicated area at the side of the building housing the lastest offering from Dyno Dynamics featuring a 4 Wheel Dyno that has it's own weather station and a stand alone Computer System.

The area also has an efficient exhaust gas evacuation system as does the main workshop floor ensuring safe working and training conditions.
