Vince Belladonna won his maiden championship this season at Perth Motorplex, but the popular Super Street racer will now be moving on to bigger and better race cars in a quest for speed.
Belladonna took the series out with a win at the last event in his Holden Torana, enough to overcome Commodore driver Michael Waters who came into the round leading in the points. “It was brilliant and a surprise to win,” Belladonna said. “We've gone second and third so many times now, I didn't think I was going to get it.” Belladonna has been racing for 24 years, and 22 of those have been in his current Torana which has progressed over the years to have run a best time of 10.96sec. at 194kmh. The faithful machine has a 350 cubic inch V8 motor, a Turbo 400 automatic transmission and a Demon carburettor and has developed a keen following from spectators Super Street is a category for sedans running between 11.00sec. and 12.99sec. and sees both purpose built vehicles and true street cars competing. With the championship under the belt, Belladonna will now move on to his new race car, an LX Torana-bodied Top Doorslammer. “It's taking its time but is nearly done, it has been about two and a half years in the build,” he said. “It is built to Doorslammer specs but we will run Supercharged Outlaws and Top Comp first to learn about the car.” The new Torana will be powered by a Hemi V8 using a Littlefield supercharger and will be capable of covering the quarter mile in under 6.5sec. at over 350kmh. Belladonna will be adapting to the driving slowly an with the advice of mentors such as world record holding Top Doorslammer racer John Zappia. “It will feel awesome,” he said. “I like going fast but it doesn't mean we're going to go for everything straight away. You learn in bits and pieces and by making mistakes.” While there will be a new toy to play with, Belladonna is keen to see his Super Street Torana still out on the track rather than tucked away in a garage. “If my son Carmelo is good with me then he will drive,” he said. “People will still see it out on the track no matter what.”
