Robin Judd became Australia's quickest Top Doorslammer racer at the Winternationals in Queensland recently, when he blitzed to a 5.90sec. pass.
The run made his Studebaker-bodied car the second quickest sedan in the world and stole the record away from fellow West Australian John Zappia. "We always had the power and the conditions were just perfect to put it to the track," Judd said. "It felt fast but you never know how fast it is going to be." The Winternationals weekend saw four drivers in the 5sec. zone, showing many teams are getting a handle on running quick times in Top Doorslammers which are supercharged, V8-powered sedans running methanol fuel. The accountant by trade said the team worked more on the tuning of the chassis and the fuel system to get the very quick time. "We're analysing the data and working out how to transfer weight," he said. "We've also looking at the clutch set up a bit differently and changed gear ratios. It all came together on a killer track surface." Judd ran two "fives" at the event, the other a 5.94sec. pass which was enough to back up the 5.90sec. for a new national record. Repeating the feat is something he hopes to be able to do regularly next season. "If the track prep is there and the conditions are right then it is definitely repeatable," he said. "The competition is going to be as fierce as ever next season." One thing Judd would like to change is getting some more race wins as despite his quick times he was often frustrated by unlucky first round losses. "I need to concentrate on my reaction times and racing skills," he said. "Once you get through the first round anything can happen. I think we came up against Brett Stevens two or three times during the season and he always had our measure." Judd's achievement was also interesting in that it was done with the oldest car in the Top Doorslammer field, originally built in the late nineties. "The technology hasn't changed that much and it's as good a car as any out there," he said. "We plan on building a new car next year, but mainly just to make changes to make it more user friendly to work on between rounds." Judd is no stranger to being Australia's quickest doorslammer. In 2000 he ran a 6.17sec. pass which at the time was just as impressive as his latest passes. "We lost our way before but we're not going to now," he said. |
