Krystal Ecclestone became Modified champion for the first time this season, the only female to win a series this year.
Her pink 'Girl's Torque' dragster might seem like the traditional girl's car but with the V8 Ford motor in the back it pushes to times of 9.6sec. for the quarter mile at a touch over 200kmh. Ecclestone said the championship win was an awesome experience. “It was great to get the win after the pit crew and sponsors' consistent help over the last few seasons,” she said. “We were all very happy and excited that we finally got there.” Modified is one of the hardest categories in which to win with many tough race cars involved. It is a Group Three category, meaning racers select their own handicap based on the time they think their car will run, but which they are not able to go under. “Modified is a tough bracket, there are a lot of consistent cars and keeping the consistency to get through rounds and making sure we didn’t break anything would be the hardest part,” Ecclestone said. The championship chase was hot right until the last event with Ecclestone leading followed by Mark Mackay and Andrew Katavatis. “I was extremely nervous because it would be our first championship win and I wanted to bring it home,” Ecclestone said. “I knew that it was close and it could still be anyone’s win so it was pretty nerve racking.” Things got very stressful as the first round saw Ecclestone take a shock lose to Steve McGuinness while Katavatis himself eliminated Mackay. Unfortunately for Katavatis the next round saw him also lose to McGuinness, deciding the championship in Ecclestone's favour. Next season the team has set themselves the target of a back to back win. “I would like to win another championship next season but would also love to step up the pace and go a bit faster,” Ecclestone said. Also unique in the Modified championship was the fact that the top three racers were all under the age of 22 years old. “I think it’s great that there is a good mix of ages amongst the racers, but (the older racers) are keeping us on our toes,” Ecclestone said. “I love that they everyone is laid back and helps each other out when it's needed despite what's happening on the championship ladder.” |
