Kaine Weighell secured his first ever Super Sedan championship this season, doing it surprisingly easy over the rest of the tough field at Perth Motorplex.

Weighell had the championship wrapped up by the last round, where all he had to do was turn up to take away the prize.

His main rivals Mike Naylor and Yvette Gregg were unable to stop the Collie Home Timber and Hardware Torana driver who won three events through the nine-round series.

Weighell said he was rapt with his first championship.

"I'm still in shock, it's something I really wanted and I finally got it," he said. "It was definitely unexpected when you're up against some of the big name guys like (Australian champion)

Shane Wynd.

"It's only my third season too so to take it out was very cool."

Weighell's Torana uses a 415 cubic inch (6.8 litre) Extreme Performance Mechanical Chev and a two-speed Powerglide transmission to push it to a best time of 8.97sec. at 236kmh. The engine makes a big 633 horsepower.

It is also equipped with a chrome moly roll cage should something untoward happen on the strip.

"We're quite happy with the car, especially the way it launches from the start line," he said. "It still doesn't have a race chassis so people are amazed at how straight it leaves. We've made no adjustments at all and we're not quite sure how it does it."

Drag racing is definitely a family affair for Weighell, with father Jim making all the decisions on the 'dial in' handicaps for races that the category needs. He's the best one to give advice as he used to race the car himself.

"Dad works out all the dial ins and he's generally spot on," Kaine said. "Once he was very sick and had to stay home, so I had him on the phone giving me dial ins from Collie."

Despite the efficiency of their racing operation, Weighell is sure he had a little extra help this season, ensuring he prayed on the start line before each race and thanked God after his wins.

"It's my unfair advantage," he said. "I thinking praying on the line helps me relax and focus. I ask for the confidence to win and He gives me peace and calmness."

As a racer with no less than God at his side, Weighell will look to back up the championship next season as well as enjoying himself..

"We're going to have a bit of fun and leave the wheelie bars up high," he said. "This car is like a part of the family now, I can't see us ever getting rid of it."
