The WA Drag Racing season wrapped up on Saturday night with the running of the Grand Finals event in very cold conditions.
The cool weather provided the engines with plenty more horsepower but also made the track a bit trickier for anyone who could not tame down their set ups enough. Top Comp was one of the wildest categories with winners being decided just as much by who could stay in their own lane. Eventually it was Wayne Keys coming out on top with his supercharged Holden Monaro, which ran a personal best 6.17sec. time at 367kmh during the night. He defeated Andrew Minogue's Ford Falcon which could not return after a supercharger backfire in the previous round. The championship meantime went to Funny Car driver Rob Pilkington who ended up way ahead in the points when Adam Croker could not race due to parts not arriving in time and John Zappia was away racing in the Australian Top Doorslammer Championship. Graeme Simms took both the event win and the championship in Super Comp, his Toyota Supra defeating Allen Puglia's Ford Probe for the fifth time this season and running under the national record to boot. Ross Townson won Comp Bike for the first time this season and significantly took out the Kate Scott Memorial trophy, dedicated to Scott who was killed during the Port Arthur tragedy. Townson was riding the bike that Scott's partner Mick Sargent used to own and that she would pit crew on. The championship in the category went easily to Neil Anderson after he took five wins from nine events on his Kawasaki ZX10R. Steve McGrath won his third event in a row in Supercharged Outlaws and in the end had the championship comprehensively wrapped up. Other championship winners included Krystal Ecclestone in Modified, Kaine Weighell in Super Sedan, Adam Ewing in Modified Bike, Vince Belladonna in Super Street and Ethan Hort in Junior Dragster. The only incident of the day occurred when Modified Bike rider Andrew McClure flipped his Suzuki over during a qualifying run. He managed to get into the ambulance under his own power and only had to be taken to hospital to get some rubber from the strip taken out of his back. |
