Boasting a 100 percent strike rate in his debut season of ANDRA Australian Pro Stock Motorcycle competition is Brisbane drag racer Dion Prowse, as he looks to make it three wins from three outings during the Night Fire Top Fuel Championships at Queensland's Willowbank Raceway on January 5/6.
The rookie has remained ice cool in his approach to racing in the professional ranks and is obviously benefiting from the advice and tutelage of his mentor within the ranks of the Brett Stevens Racing enterprise. With the advent of engine specifications to NHRA standards for the category, the performances on track by all riders have been nothing short of scintillating. For Prowse, a former sidecar motorcycle champion, his elevation to top Drag Racing rider status over fellow Queenslanders Daniel Peatey and Michael Gilbertson is further testament to his own ability. Peatey, of Gladstone, is the reigning Australian champion after claiming back the title he first won in 2003/04 from 2004/05 champion Gilbertson, who hails from Townsville. "Every time the Brett Stevens Racing team takes a vehicle to the race track, whether it is a car or a bike, it is there to win and it has been no different for me on the S&S powered Buell," Prowse said. "We put a lot of time and effort in to make sure that I knew all about the bike and h ow to ride it before my professional debut in September and it has paid off in a big way." "It's been a dream start for the team to be two wins from two events during our first season in the Pro Stock Motorcycle bracket. It's just unbelievable! "To win my first ever professional Drag Race on a hole shot against such a quality field full of experienced racers would be the highlight of my entire motorcycle riding career to date." "I would really like to thank Brett Stevens and S&S for giving me this chance and I hope it is the start of many more victories to come." Prowse directed the S&S Racing Pro Stock Buell to a sensational Championship debut win at Sydney's East Coast Nationals during September, before backing up that performance with a similar result at his home track in Queensland two weeks later at the Australian Nationals. On each occasion it was a face-off with reigning champ Peatey in the final and with just 20 points separating t he pair, it will certainly be game-on when Australia's first event of 2007 gets underway at Willowbank Raceway's Night Fire Top Fuel Championships. "It has been far from easy to be where we are at the moment at the top of the table, there has been some very strong competition from some of the other riders," Prowse said. "Of the two rounds so far, Daniel Peatey has top qualified and I have met him in the final on both occasions. "I think our duel will continue and it will go right down to the wire in the National Championship so there is going to be no margin for error. "After a couple of months lay off I am going to be concentrating all of my efforts now on making sure that we have every chance of continuing our form in the new year and for the rest of the season. "The bike has had a complete service and I am itching to get back out there and hopefully reward the people that have shown their faith in me by going all the way in the Champions hip." All Pro Stock Motorcycle competitors are this year running 1655cc powered, NHRA Spec engines and that has seen a notable shift up in intensity. Prowse is running a unique replica of the World's quickest Pro Stock Motorcycle, however Daniel Peatey has continued to hold down all Australian records running a quickest 7.094 second pass during round one and backing that up with a fastest 185.26 mile per hour mark in round two. |
