A record number of Interstate Drag Racing teams are heading West to the Perth Motorplex for this weekend's two day Drag Racing feast.
Is it the great weather? The sport's best spectators, the sensational venue, great air, the points on offer for the Rocket Allstars Drag Racing Series or the opportunity to mix it with some of the best Drag Racers in the country? Well of course the answer is all of the above! The 37th Chill Westernationals is shaping up to be another great instalment in the history of this prestigious event. The event will produce some great racing on track and with over 50 interstate teams adding to the already healthy local fields a walk through the pit paddock will be worth the price of admission alone to check out race teams you have never seen before. Some teams to look out for include the Pierano Supercharged Outlaw altered who are a long way from home. Home being Rockhampton in North Queensland which of course is currently in flood - but they are coming direct from Sydney where they picked up their first ever win in Supercharged Outlaws at the Summernationals. With over 4 decades in Drag Racing you may be excused in thinking the Sydneys Benny Gatt would not be losing any sleep with the big weekend coming up. Well you would be very wrong with Gatt commenting ''That I will not believe I will be going until I step onto the plane!'' Gatt also will be racing in Genie Exhaust Supercharged Outlaws with his famous XA Coupe appearing for the very first time at the Perth Motorplex. Another racer coming off a first up win is New Zealander Athol Williams who put his 6.5 second nitro burning Supercharged Kawasaki into the Winners circle at the recent Summernationals. In GT Radial Tyres Competition it will blown Altered heaven with no less than 4 of the beast prowling in the 26 car field that has to be whittled down to 16 for Sundays eliminations. The Queensland duo of Justin Walshe and Steven Ham will find a formidable confrontation with local altered racers Mark Sheehan and Stuart Rowland who have both run 5 seconds in their short wheel based beasts. Of course while on track it is all out warfare off track we want to make out interstate (and international) visitors feel welcome - so make sure you take the time to drop by their pits and thank them for making the huge effort to come to the Perth Motorplex to race for us. |
