The Top Fuel championship round got off to a great start at Perth Motorplex on Friday night with some sterling performances and a spectacular blow up in the nitro dragster ranks.
In the first session Darren Morgan topped the field with a 4.77/311mph pass, a new PB for this car and the first time it has done a full pass. The Wicked Quick team was presented very well and was one of the most popular cars with the crowd. Alongside was Phil Read who stayed with Morgan early but then looked to push a head gasket out and slowed for a 5.09. Hometown hero Martin Stamatis was out next and impressed early with a well driven 4.81 that was out of the groove. He shut down slightly early when he felt a couple of cylinders go away. Phil Lamattina was to compete next to Stamatis but couldn't find reverse gear and had to drive through. Round two would see more action. Morgan was up against Stamatis and though both got away well with Morgan on a carbon copy according to the increments until the noise went away, while Stamatis was barreling until ka-boom, the engine went nuclear. See the photo below! After the lengthy clean up Lamattina faced Read. Read shut off early though we couldn't see a reason, possibly a blower belt. In the other lane Lamattina was on a mission though and went to top qualifying spot with a 4.66/309.
