Queensland's Ricky Steffens defeated fellow banana bender Ashley Bailey in the Nitro Funny Car Challenge at Perth Motorplex on Saturday. Full picture gallery online, to see gallery click here

Steffens's “Nitro Freak” Camaro ran a 5.57sec. time in the final at 414kmh to defeat Bailey's 5.72sec. time in “Chemical Warfare” in the final.

Steffens won the evening's first race when Bailey's nitro engine, tuned by his brother Rod, threw a fuel line off, creating a small fire and seeing him slow while Steffens ran a good number but had the differential break, meaning he would miss the second round.

Bailey evened the ledger on his bye run with a national record equalling 5.37sec. pass.

Steffens was pleased to take the win in a car also owned and operated by the Bailey brothers.

“These things are just awesome to drive,” he said. “We blew the diff on the first pass and a heap of work was needed to get the car back to put the show on.”

It has been a hectic time for Bailey recently with his shock absorber business burning down two months ago and also the birth of his first child.

“There's been a fair few things happening so it has been a massive effort on everyone's part,” Bailey said. “To see the 5.37sec. we were really stoked but we want to go lower than that.”

The next drag racing event at Perth Motorplex will be the USA Jet Dragsters on January 12.
