Who to watch out for this weekend at Perth Motorplex...we rate them and give you all the info...
1 John Zappia WA 185 - WA's hometown hero will be a difficult man to beat, in fact the only way he will be beaten is if he beats himself. He is one of the few racers with experience on the new concrete surface, having already run a 5.99 on it. Searching for more speed, the cool air could suit.
2 Stuart Bishop QLD 125 - Two semi finals finishes this season have made Stuart Bishop a new force. His Camaro is a gorgeous car and runs some big speeds. He is the hot tip from wadragracing.com voters to run the next 5sec. pass. Needs to watch his reaction times.
3 Steve Stanic NSW 120 - While he missed qualifying at the first event, the former national champion Stanic made up for it by winning in Queensland. Always a tough competitor, Stanic's consistency is what makes him dangerous in the Lucky Belleri Camaro.
3 Victor Bray QLD 120 - Legend of the sport who has returned to some big numbers recently. He could quite easily claim the win in WA if shake doesn't kill the big Chev.
5 Gary Phillips QLD 100 - The Lucas Oils Studebaker is the reigning champ and has always been able to lay down big numbers at the Motorplex. Rarely a non qualifier, Phillips is always focused on consistency.
6 Robin Judd WA 80 - Judd's Studebaker has been struggling to find consistency but laid down a 6.14 this week at a Motorplex test day. He needs to overcome the tyre shake the car has been hampered by.
6 Aaron Lynch QLD 80 - Did well in his Funny Car last week, Lynch is back on the scene of an accident he had last season where he biffed the wall. This is the field's only other five second doorslammer. It will be very quick or out of the field.
8 Peter Kapiris VIC 65 - Victorian fan favourite Peter Kapiris has been running some big speeds lately and just needs to get things sorted in the early part of the track. If he qualifies we tip he could appear in the finals.
8 Ben Bray QLD 20 45 65 - The stunning Castrol Monaro found a bit of pace at Willowbank and Bray will be hopeful he can tame it to the Motorplex track.
10 Brett Stevens QLD 40 - Stevens has struggled so far this season, off the pace of the top cars. This is unlike "The Boss" and we are sure he has done a huge amount of testing to try and get his edge back.
10 Steve Packman QLD 40 - Packman is back to WA where he recorded his best career result, a semi finals place at the Westernationals earlier this year. Still hasn't become a consistently quick car, but could surprise.
14 Kath Stevens QLD 20 - Mrs Boss has done well in recent testing but is still waiting to make it to race day. Hopefully she gets a good run in with the Falcon.
Gary Stevens WA - Gary gave his car a bit of a biff at the test day we hear so hopefully it will be repaired for the weekend. Tuning by Grant O'Rourke could make this car a surprise package. Top Bike
1 Troy Maclean QLD 165 - The Jack Daniel's bike has been running well so far this season with two runner ups. Always consistent and could unleash some 6.5sec terror on the field.
2 Ian Ashelford WA 160 - A veteran of the field, Ian Ashelford's new bike has really come together with a best of 6.66sec. Now it has great consistency and won the recent Australian Nationals. Makes a great looking nitro flame.
3 Brett Stevens QLD 155 - A win in round one of the season started Stevens's season well. A leak in round one at the Nationals ended his chances. Ran a 6.4 recently and has one of the quickest bikes in the field.
4 Athol Williams NZ 80 - This nitro Suzuki has some of the greatest potential in the field. It could run a 6.4 or 6.5 with ease and can easily topple the Harley riders. It is a truely spectacular machine, needs some luck.
8 Neville Smith QLD 60 - Neville Smith makes his first appearance at Perth Motorplex with his Brett Stevens-built nitro Harley. This could be another six second runner if Smith can make a full pass.
10 Phillip Parker VIC 60 - Sentimental favourite Parker brings "Gracie" back to her spiritual home. He is looking for his first 6sec. pass here and everyone is hoping he can do it. Mechanical dramas have been the biggest issue with this new bike but this is the one I want to see run well the most.
10 Jay Upton WA 40 - Tenth is an unusual place to see Jay Upton, but he has not qualified in three race events now. The new Honda combination is still going through teething stages. Not a safe bet, but if it goes it will be rocket-like.
12 Mark Drew WA 20 - Clutch dramas had Drew puzzled in the early stages of the championship but he is hopeful he now has this sorted. This is another bike with 6.6sec. potential. Watch it carry the front wheel!
Syd Standring WA - A nitro Harley Syd is slowly getting on top of. It ran a 7.03 at a recent Motorplex event and may run its first 6sec. pass this weekend. Could be a surprise to the front runners.
Kim Stevens WA - This Brett Stevens built bike ran consistently in the 6sec. zone recently and Kim won the Westernationals earlier this year we think. Not travelling any more but this doesn't make it any less competitive.
Mark Ashelford - The second of the Attitude bikes is the most consistent in the field. Edging into the 6sec. zone recently, would not be surprised to see the bike in the semis. |
