The staggering growth of West Australian Drag Racing continues with a record 217 entries for the opening event of the 2007/2008 season at Perth Motorplex this weekend.
From the final season at Ravenwsood Raceway which saw an average 124 entries per event to the inaugural season at the Kwinana venue in 2000 which saw a 23% increase to 153 entries there has been a steady increase in competitor growth. Last season saws an average of 204 race teams for each of the 9 major events and with the record breaking 217 entries for the season opener this weekend indications are that last years average will be exceeded. Nine major events have been scheduled for this season with 4 two day events featuring Australian Championship rounds. The most pleasing trend is the growth in Group 2 racing and Supercharged Outlaws. The Group 2 supercharged GT Radial Tyres Top Competition and Group 3 Genie Exhaust Supercharged Outlaws eliminators have over 30 entries between them and along with 13 Group 2 Pro Auto Performance Super Comp and 16 Trophy Specialist Competition Bike nominations ensures that the meeting will be spectacular. Healthy fields have been received in all other brackets including 41 entries in Stone Racing Transmission Super Sedan and 42 entries for Southside Engine Centre Super Street. A huge fireworks display has been planned to commerate the start to another exciting season of Drag Racing in Western Australia. |
