West Australian Robin Judd is one of the best and most experienced Top Doorslammer racers chasing the national championship, but his last few seasons have been tortuous affairs as he looks for consistency to take the title. Judd said last season was disappointing. "We had lots of little things go wrong," he said. "There was gearbox trouble and a few crew errors. It was the worst season we've had in a long time." Once bitten, Judd is now aiming to turn around the bad form and find the tune-up that his Studebaker, running a supercharged 3000hp V8, needs. "We're approaching the new season with a different attitude," he said. "The race car preparation has stepped up, we're motivating ourselves differently and we have sought some mentoring. We want to kick off on a good note at the East Coast Nationals." Judd has been competing on the national series for the better part of a decade now, the accountant by trade delighting in his alter-ego on the track. "It's very different to my professional life but I find that complementary, you need that mix in life," he said. "I love the challenge of driving and tuning this type of animal. It's part of the competitive nature I have, I don't like being beaten." Judd believes his car is capable of the 5sec. times that while once revolutionary, are now becoming more common in the category. "We think we have the tune up now," he said. "Before lock up clutches were legal we ran as quick as was needed to half track but it slipped the clutch from there and lost speed. But the main thing is consistency, I want 6.0sec. and low 6.1sec. times on a regular basis. "We need to develop a better all round package. I need to be quicker with my reaction times on the start line and we need to stop the tyre shake the car gets." Judd began his season with a semi finals appearance at the East Coast Nationals and makes his first appearance in Perth in October. |
