National Control Council meets in Adelaide Print E-mail
Written by ANDRA
Thursday, 16 August 2007

.August 9th through 11th saw the ANDRA National Control Council assemble in Adelaide for a number of meetings across three days. New Division Directors Colin Linney (NSW), Gary Kropp (Victoria/Tasmania) and Terry Jongen (WA) joined the group for the first time and Palmyra promoter Steve Gay took the place of Kevin Prendergast representing the Australian Drag Racing Promoters Association.

One of the early agenda items was the Drag Racing Development Fund, introduced earlier this year to support wider public exposure of the sport through a new national television schedule and expanded public relations initiatives. The NCC ratified sizeable reductions to DRDF collections for participants in Groups Two, Three and Four announced in June. Member input from recent weeks was considered and the Delegates supported continuation of the DRDF programme.

A moratorium on changes to the ANDRA Competition Regulations had been proposed at Divisional level prior to the meeting. There was little support for an immediate change but the NCC would consider longer term application of limits, which would not apply in cases of safety or parity issues, after the current timetable for the 2007/2008 period.

Towing Practices were raised, with concerns over drivers sitting in the door opening of sedan type vehicles while towing. No limits would be applied but the practice would be monitored.

During April working parties were formed covering Top Doorslammer, Group Two and Junior Dragster. Their reports and recommendations will be presented to the NCC in February 2008.

Standards for helmets used in drag racing will be reviewed prior to the introduction of updates in September 2008. Recommendations will be circulated for comment during February/April 2008.

Concerns over inconsistencies with vehicles running under the 11.00 cut in Super Street Eliminator were considered. At ANDRA Championship level from the opening of the 2007/2008 season, vehicles running elapsed times quicker than 11.00 seconds during eliminations will be disqualified from competition. Qualifying runs quicker than 11.00 seconds will be placed in the lowest qualifying position, and all dial-ins must remain within class limits.

Audits of on-board fire systems will continue to assess compliance with current regulations.

The requirement under ACR 4.4.7.2 for helmet bars, intended to retain the driver's helmet within the roll cage where the opening between the uprights may permit the helmet to protrude, will be applicable to all relevant vehicles.

An increase to sixteen car fields for Top Doorslammer and Pro Stock was approved for the 2008 Tin Top Titles event at Willowbank Raceway in April 2008. This is conditional upon at least 16 cars attempting to qualify in each case. First round losers will receive 20 championship points and none will be awarded to non qualifiers.

ACR 3.10.1 was amended for the 2007/2008 season to permit the momentary interruption of engine ignition to facilitate gear shifts. The NCC has been advised that where electronic engine management is permitted this function is sometimes achieved through interruption of fuel injection. Under Section 3.10.1, Drivetrain d) the third sentence is amended to read "Ignition/fuel interruption to facilitate gear change permitted."

ACR 4.9.9.2, Support Vehicles/Crew, required that riders of all motorcycles used wear a helmet. It was not intended that this apply to four wheel motorcycles referred to as "quad bikes" and the fourth sentence of the regulation is amended to read; "Where two wheel motorcycles are used, a helmet meeting AS/NZ 2063 as a minimum must be worn by all riders where the vehicle exceeds 10 kph."
