Beat the Heat WA wins in Darwin Print E-mail
Written by Beat the Heat

Since it''s inception in October 2005, Beat the Heat (WA) Inc has been planning a sojourn to the Northern Territory to promote the Beat the Heat message with it''s sister chapters, Beat the Heat (NT) Inc and the newly formed Beat the Heat (QLD) Inc.

The coming together of the three Beat the Heat chapters was an Australian first with three states joining forces through the same program and all three chapters promoting the same goals and objectives for road safety by encouraging young drivers to confine the exploration of their cars to the track rather than engaging in the dangerous practice of illegal street racing and hooning on public streets.

The biggest challenge in getting to Darwin was the logistics involved in the transportation of both Beat the Heat drag cars, Tango 1 (1997 VT HSV Manta sedan) and the newly donated Tango 2 (a 2004 Pontiac GTO Coupe) provided by Holden Genuine Parts, one support/tow vehicle, two support trailers and a team of 6 BTH personnel.

Seacorp Logistics stepped in to assist and their generous sponsorship enabled the team to transport both drag vehicles and 1 support trailer Perth - Darwin. Without Seacorp''s generous assistance, the costs involved in getting the vehicles and equipment to Darwin may well have seen the trip not eventuate.

Upon arrival in Darwin the WA Beat the Heat team were greeted by Superintendent Mark Jeffs.

Supt Jeffs i s the President of Beat the Heat (NT) Inc and founder of the Australian Beat the Heat program).

The first race meeting at Hidden Valley was on Saturday May 26, 2007 and was the third round of local Drag Racing competition.

Both WA''s Tango 1 and NT''s The Heat competed in the Super Street class while WA''s Tango 2 made its first on track appearance in the Street class.

This was the first time (after three years in the planning) that the WA and NT Teams have had the opportunity to race and Tango 1 finally got the opportunity to go head to head with the local NT guys and their beast of a VY SS Commodore.

Both cars acquitted themselves well with Tango 1 finding the balmy northern air difficult to deal with and posted a best of 11.9 seconds for the night. The Heat on the other hand relished in the ''cooler'' Darwin nights and posted a PB of 11.502 seconds and went on to be the outright overall winner of the Super Street category that night.

Fri day June 1, 2007 was the second of the two racing events scheduled for the Beat The Heat teams. This event saw the WA and NT chapters fighting it out in the Inaugural Beat the Heat ''Safe Streets'' Challenge hosted by the Hidden Valley Drag Racing Association.

The prize was the Allfast Torque Converters Safe Streets Perpetual Cup donated by AllFast Torque Converters in Perth.

The Heat and Tango 1 raced against higher end street cars while Tango 2 gave the local drivers the chance to match race a performance car in showroom trim.

The GTO driven by John Solich ran a consistent 14.5 seconds all night long on a 14.6 dial in and was a hit with the crowd as were all the Heat cars as they lined up against each other with flashing lights blazing.

With his first time in the car John posted the fastest reaction time for the night of .008 seconds and winning the $100 fuel voucher donated by AusFuel. John immediately presented the voucher to the second place winner who posted a .011 in a Toyota Echo. Yes even Echo''s come out to race on these nights.

All three Beat the Heat Chapters raced against each other during the course of the evening with only Tango 1 (WA) and The Heat (NT) competing for the cup as the Mackay Beat the Heat car (Ford EF Fairmont) was unable to attend.

In what was a hard fought and tightly contested event the consistency of Tango 1 saw WA win the contest 3-1.

It was a bitter sweet battle victory though as the NT car just got faster and faster in the cool air and broke out with it''s fastest ever time of 11.422sec.

In the week leading up to this event, all teams were on hand for photo shoots and radio interviews with the local Darwin media throwing their full support behind the event.

3 lucky members of the public won passenger rides in The Heat, Tango 1 and Tango 2.

The Beat the Heat (WA) Inc team would like to thank Supt Mark Jeffs and the NT team for their generou s hospitality and assistance, Seacorp, Holden Genuine Parts and AllFast Torque Converters for assisting the WA Team in getting to Darwin and their continued support.
