Phil Lamattina and his Fuchs Top Fuel Dragster have claimed their first ever round win with an emphatic display at the Winternationals in Brisbane over the long weekend. Lamattina took out the last event of the 2006/2007 Top Fuel racing season after beating arch rival Phil Read in the final.
Lamattina was dominant across the weekend, setting two personal best times, including a lightning 4.62 second pass in the semi final, reaching an impressive 323mph along the way . But in the final, it was pure driving skill, rather than horsepower that saw the likable carrot farmer cross the line ahead of Phil Read, after both dragsters developed tyre shake. Lamattina's superior throttle response thrusting the Fuchs Dragster back on track and over the line in 5.09 seconds. Enough to clinch his inaugural round title; "Absolutely unreal!" a jubilant Lamattina said after he finally realised his season-long goal. "It's a fantastic way to end the season. We always knew we had the potential to win a round and it's taken a few rounds to get the whole [race car] package working but it all came together for us this weekend." "We definitely had the best race car this weekend. When there was a lot of talk that the race track was not up to a fast time, we came out and blasted a 4.62 [second] pass and I think it shook a few people up. The Fuchs Dragster was the only car on Sunday to get into the four second bracket, and we did it twice," Phi l added. Lamattina Top Fuel Racing's win was completed in front of a number of the management from naming rights sponsor, Fuchs Lubricants - "Fuchs took a risk when they backed us this year and it's something that our team are extremely appreciative of. I'd like to thank Wayne [Hoiles, Fuchs MD] and his team for their support and we hope this win repays some of their faith." Phil also paid tribute to retiring Co-crew Chief, John Marshall - "John has been the linchpin of our team since we started in top fuel racing and we couldn't have achieved our championship in 2004/2005 and our win this weekend without him. We wish him all the best in his retirement from racing and give our heart-felt thanks for all of his efforts." Describing what to expect from Lamattina Top Fuel Racing next season, Phil added - "The win here at Willowbank has proven that our decision to restructure the team last year was the right one. Now that we have tasted victory again, watch o ut for next season. We'll be back even better and stronger with our eyes set on one thing, the championship." |
