Jason McDermott left it to the last race of the season to wrap up his first Super Street state championship at Perth Motorplex. The 32 year old security officer had to win the final of the last event in order to get enough points to pass fellow competitor Alby Bakranich, and he did it with a defeat of Vince Belladonna's Torana. "I was just concentrating on every race by itself," he said. "It took my mind off the championship, I just wanted to win every race." McDermott races a Holden Commodore with a 355cu. in. V8 engine. It makes 363 horsepower at the rear wheels and uses a Turbo 400 automatic transmission. Super Street is a category for both street cars and purpose built sedans running between 11.00sec. and 12.99sec. to race. Coming into the 2006/2007 season, McDermott did not think he would be in the running for the championship. "I hoped to be in the top five, just being a little competitive," he said. After two events McDermott was concerned about his Commodore slowing down in performance. "Try to stay consistent was a challenge, the car started to slow down by about a tenth of a second each event," he said. "We still don't know what the cause is, we changed everything to try and fix it." McDermott's first ride in drag racing was a lot faster than most, even if he was a passenger. "I had always been into cars and my wife bought me a ride in the Grant O'Rourke Top Doorslammer in 2001," he said. "After that I thought I would like to have my own car. We started with a nitrous Super Street car but it was too hard to keep consistent so we built the Commodore I have now." While the immediate future still contains Super Street plans, McDermott says he would eventually like to work his way through the ranks into Super Stock, and then Pro Stock. |
