FIL's Photo Thread - 2008/04/05 13:49 I've been getting back into long exposure photography lately, went out on a Friday night a while ago and took a few photos... Dragged k8 and one of my mates along to keep me company...

Anyway... here's some of the results...

Welshpool road in Lesmurdie, around 11pm, exposure of 4 minutes 30 seconds...

A quieter road just around the corner from the last shot, only 1 car in the shot this time, 4 minute exposure (I think)...

Out the back of Lesmurdie, this neglected sign is obscured by an overgrown hedge. There's a new sign on the neighbouring block. Exposure was 6 minutes 30 seconds, and it was still a little dark.

I wanted to try some flashlight painting, and here's one of the results... Exposure was almost 6 minutes and the railing and path leading onto Mundaring Weir were lit with a handheld spotlight. This was at about 2am and was the last shot before we decided to call it a night.

and there's a few more here:

Re:Night Photos - 2008/04/05 13:53 These shots were taken almost a month later, another full moon means it's time to go take more photos in the dark... This was on the way back from the Good Friday burnouts at the Motorplex...

This disused bus stop is in the ex-suburb of Hope Valley, just over the other side of Anketell Road.

Anyway, the shot was a 3 minute exposure @ 100 ISO, lit with my Canon 580ex flash and some coloured gel's...

More shots at the links in the post above...

Re:Night Photos - 2008/04/05 13:55

This one was a couple of days later, the Monday night of the long weekend in fact, on the way home from visiting my parents we dropped in at the Leighton Battery in Mosman Park.

I haven't been down there since I was a kid and we went for a crawl through the tunnels. They've since tarted the tunnels up a bit and done a fair bit of work above ground too...

Re:Night Photos - 2008/04/07 19:36 hhaha.... yes, it's something like that actually...

*set up camera*

"kate, can you point the torch at that spot?"

*focus while the torch is on*

*kate, can you get the red and green gels for me?*

*start exposure*

"red please"

*fires off red flash pops*

"green please"

*fires off green pops*

now... after the 5 minute exposure is finished, we just have to wait another 5 minutes for the noise reduction to finish, then we can see if it was any good and start over...

Re:Night Photos - 2008/04/30 12:55 Here's another couple of shots from Sunday night..

This is the rear of my parents place in Cottesloe, I've taken a few photos of this place over the years, and this one I'm actually quite happy with... Has heaps of extra light thrown in with a loooooong exposure.

And this is the lighthouse on the North mole in Freo. Again, long exposure plus extra light from a handheld flash.

Here's a few shots I took today at CBH's Midland grain store. Not sure exactly how long this place has been out of action, but it's been a while.

<Edited cos I forgot how to control sizes on Luke's forum>

Re:Night Photos - 2008/05/18 23:17 Here's a couple of shots from a trip to the old South Coogee Power Station.

This place is _huge_

This is the coastal side, the bigger of the 2 main halls.

Instructions on what to do if there's an alternator fire.

From what I've read about this place, these waterways were used to keep the system cool.

This is the other of the 2 main halls, just as long as the first, but not as wide.

Re:Night Photos - 2008/05/18 23:24
The poor old Datsun's seen better days.

I wish I could say this was some never-ending pipe to the centre of the earth or something, but it was just under 2 metres deep.

By now the light was starting to fade, so these last 2 shots use a lot of additional light and some long exposure. This is one of the doors leading from the eastern hall back into the coastal side.

One of the entrances to the main hall, this one on the northern face.

There's a lot left to discover about this place, so I'm keen to get back there one day. (or night)

Re:Night Photos - 2008/05/20 10:58 Nice pics Fil

Remind me of that mob in the UK that go and look through all the abandoned buildings. Some spooky stuff, but their one on the old MG factory was fascinating.

Spotted this down at a mates place in Cookernup (near Harvey) on the long weekend.

And this was at the historical Workshops in Yarloop the next day.

Re:Night Photos - 2008/06/15 19:30 We went out last night and took a few more photos...

The following shots were all taken from the South Perth foreshore.

View of Perth city from beside the Narrows Bridge.

View of the "Old" Swan Brewery from near the Narrows Bridge.

Shot from between the 2 Narrows Bridges from the south side.

Re:Night Photos - 2008/06/15 19:38 After we took those shots we went for a drive to the old Belmont Kiln's (near Ascot) to see whether we could get in there and take a few shots. Ended up taking a few snaps of a mates MX-5 out the front.

After Belmont we headed to Alfred's Kitchen for a late dinner and then ducked around the corner to take a few shots of some historical Guildford buildings.

This is the Guildford post office, which is still in use today.

This is the "Old Colonial Gaol", just a short walk from the post office.

And one of a train passing us, looking from the post office back towards Alfred's.

Re:Night Photos - 2008/07/22 11:36 Here's some shots from the weekend. It's time for another full moon, and although there's a lot of other ambient light in these particular shots, thats usually about the time I go out looking for things to shoot at night, because if there's no other light around, there's always the light from the moon.

Shot from the top of Jacobs Ladder in West Perth.

The view of the city is pretty cool from here too.

And looking south out over the Freeway and the Swan River

Re:Night Photos - 2008/07/22 11:37
I liked the street lights here too, so after shooting the city I turned around and shot the lights.

I liked the way the whole street was bathed in a kind of dirty yellow light from these "old style" street lamps.

k8 thought I was taking a photo of the car here.
