Haunting images from Ravenswood Raceway
Thursday, 11 August 2011

It has now been just over a decade since Ravenswood International Raceway closed, marking the end of just over 30 years of history.
Of course the sport moved on to the world class Perth Motorplex, but plenty of memories remain at the venue that really brought drag racing in Western Australia into the mainstream.
There were some rough times endured at the strip but it became one of the main venues for the sport nationally, perhaps peaking with the running of the 1990 Nationals.
Many more points rounds for national categories were run at the track, attracting top racers including many of the touring international stars of the 90s such as Gary Densham, Glenn Mikres and Scotty Cannon.
The track record finished at a respectable 5.15 from Rachelle Splatt at its final event in 2000. The speed record was held at 295mph by Ancel Horton in his jet dragster while the fastest wheel driven run was a 283mph blast from Lloyd Jones in the Southside Engine Centre Nitro Funny Car.
Recently a group has formed on Facebook to bring together some old photos from the track and posted were some photos of the track as it now exists by Dave George.
Not much is left now, but there is enough to still stir a few memories. Check out the full feature on dragnews.com.au

Bracket drop details released from Motorplex
Saturday, 06 August 2011

The countdown to the 12th season of Drag Racing at the Perth Motorplex is starting to speed up with the release of the dates for next season and confirmation of the features for each event.

The most notable change is that after 11 seasons of conducting nine major 'National Open' events per season, the 2011/2012 season will see 10 major Drag Racing events scheduled.

The Motorplex has released details about how one bracket per event will be dropped in order to keep schedules in check. Below is the bulletin about the issue.

"Last season we trialled the Sprortsman Qualifying Friday nights in an effort to try and provide ample racing opportunities in light of ever increasing Competitor numbers.

While it had many benefits, the cons outweighed the pros.

So this season we are trialling 10 National Opens with the view of taking the pressure off some of the events by dropping an eliminator.

However several events will still have a full house of local racers, being the Grand Opening, the Grand Final and of course the Westernationals.

The WA Drag Racing Track Championship will still be conducted over nine events, except for Junior Dragsters which will run eight of the 10 major events this season.

Following is a brief description of each eliminators' make up for this season.

TOP COMP: Top Comp will not be racing at the Goldenstates as most of the Top Comp racers will be competing in either Top Doorslammer or Top Alcohol.

SUPER COMP: Super Comp not be scheduled to race at the December Top Fuel event.

COMP BIKE: Comp Bike will not be racing January Nitro Funny Cars

SUPERCHARGED OUTLAWS: Supercharged Outlaws will not be racing at the January Top Fuel event.

MODIFIED: (I can hear the cheers from Modified and the groan form the other eliminators already) Modified will not be racing on Boxing Day!

SUPER SEDAN & SUPER STREET: These two elimintors will be scheduled to race at ALL TEN events, however they may choose to race all 10 if they wish too - or only 9 as we will drop their worst result from the points series.

MODIFIED BIKE: Mod Bike will not be scheduled to race at the Night of Fire event in February.

JUNIOR DRAGSTER: The Juniors will be scheduled to race at 8 of the 10 events - sitting out Boxing Day (now that has made some JD mums smile!) and the March Nitro Funny Car event. This gives Junior Dragsters 8 major events plus 6 Autotrader Fast Fridays to race at.

In summary - Apart from Junior Dragsters all eliminators will be contesting a nine event Track Championship.

I am certain there will be a number of questions...if so please email This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it and we will answer them for you but the obvious ones are:

Can I race in another eliminator when my eliminator is not scheduled? (EG: A Top Comp may choose to run SCO or vice versa, a Comp Bike may run Mod Bike etc. As long as your vehicle is 'legal' for that eliminator - simply enter!)."

New calendar released
Sunday, 31 July 2011

The 2011/2012 season of Drag Racing at the Perth Motorplex is shaping up to be the biggest ever in the venue's 12 years of operation.

After 11 years of nine major events each season, the 2011/2012 season will see ten major events on the calendar commencing in October with the 12th annual drag racing season opening on Saturday October 29.

The  season will feature two rounds of the ANDRA Pro Series Top Fuel Championship, two rounds of ANDRA Pro Series Top Doorslammer and the return of the USA Jet Dragsters after a two season absence.

For the sport's purists the news that two of Australian drag racing's traditional professional categories will make a return to the Kwinana Beach venue is the icing on the cake.

ANDRA Pro Series Top Alcohol will apear at the 40th running of the Goldenstates in November joining Top Doorslammer to make a formidable tag team of supercharged action with 5 second elapsed times at over 400kmh the norm!

And when talking tradition there is no more a traditional event in the annals of Western Australian drag racing history than the Westernationals. So it seems more than appropriate that ANDRA Pro Series Pro Stock joins Top Doorslammer and over 350 sportsman racers in the Labor Day long weekend celebration.

Fans of Nitro Funny Cars are catered for with two appearances of the unpredictable beasts including the first ever two day Nitro Funny Car event in January 2011.

Throw in the return of the USA Jet Dragsters for their first appearance in two seasons at the Boxing Day and Night of Fire events, nine months of Formula Tech Whoop Ass Wednesdays, six Autotrader Fast Fridays, the ANZAC Day Holden v Ford, a Nostalgia event and six ANDRA Test and Tunes and it is a full season.

ED: It is believed that one event at each bracket is to be dropped in order to keep entries in check. While this is not yet confirmed the possibility is being discussed in the forum, check it out - forum.
